graphic_carver.jpgThe McKinney-Vento Act is designed to address the challenges that homeless children and youths have faced in enrolling, attending, and succeeding in school.

Under the McKinney-Vento Act, State educational agencies must ensure that each homeless child and youth has equal access to the same free, appropriate public education, including a public preschool education, as other children and youths. Homeless children and youths must have access to the educational and related services that they need to enable them to meet the same challenging State academic standards to which all students are held. In addition, homeless students may not be separated from the mainstream school environment.

Homeless children and youth who do not have a fixed, adequate and regular nighttime residence are covered by the McKinney-Vento Act. These children and youth have the right to enroll in school and attend classes immediately, receive free transportation, get school meals for free without completing an application, participate in any school activity or program available to other students, and get special education services immediately if the student has a current IEP.

The Auburn Enlarged City School District is dedicated to providing assistance and support to homeless children and youth in our district. If you have any questions about this program, please contact our Homeless Liaison, Camille Johnson, at (315) 255-8801 or Camille_Johnson@auburn.cnyric.org.
